Presidio Cruise Report by Eric Quamen

Although the weather was quite nice along the Alameda Riviera early Saturday afternoon, Ann and I ran into a different story once we entered the main part of the Bay north of the Bay Bridge. We had the typical, summer-like blowing-like-stink action in full swing, and the closer we got to the Gate, the more we were feeling the 3.4 knot flood. Every time we went on starboard tack, we lost so much ground that we gave up on following the City’s coast and headed for Yellow Bluff. A bouncy ride later, it was proving impossible to sail to Horseshoe Cove; we could either get to the bluff, or head towards the St. Francis YC and get pushed to Pier 39, but no in between. Adding the motor to the fracas did the trick, and with some spectacular splashes, violent tacks, and big bounces, we blasted into the Cove entrance tired, cold, and dripping wet.

Once we got our act together, we met Hugh and Joanne Linn at the dock. They assisted in catching us and tying up in front of the Bonnie Breeze. Turned out, we two were the only boats to cruise in. Jim and Donna Earhart, our hosts, were on work duty somewhere around the grounds, and we were met later by a whole group of Lewis’s (Lewi? Lewises?) who were wise enough to drive. We took over a big table at the YC, and enjoyed the bar scene there until the lamb dinner with all the fixings was ready downstairs.

After dinner, and the obligatory dog-walks, we boaters retired to the docks and the drivers took on the traffic. At least it was a quiet night in the harbor. Ann and I were up really early, and took off before 0700 to avoid the 3.8 knot ebb that was predicted for a few hours later. The trip back was a cold but uneventful motor sail, with the temperature feeling like it was dropping the closer we got to Oakland.

We had a good time, and it was great to see everyone. I feel I was barely there, however, because the trip to Horseshoe Cove took so long and we had to leave early to beat the tide to our Mother’s Day event later that afternoon. We did get a bunch of good boating in, however, and that’s a good reason to be wet and cold all by itself. Next up for us is our annual trip up-river to the Delta, where I hope we get a chance to finally warm up a bit.

Next Cruise: Brisbane

Pencil in June 21st for the cruise to Brisbane. I thought we would do a pot luck. Brenda and I will supply the Tri-tips, smoked ribs, and chicken for the BBQ. That way we can sample pretty much all the meat groups. I will need to know by June 20th if you are coming by boat.

Then Sunday morning we can have breakfast in the Yacht Club before everyone leaves. I will be sending out directions for those wanting to drive in.

Other Upcoming Cruises

  • Don't forget to save July 26 for the Regatta at Ballena Bay (is it our 10th year?) We will be racing from the harbor around the center support of the Bay Bridge ("around the block") and back. This will also be a first for this course. Could be tricky with the fluky winds around the towers. Let me know if you are planning to cruise in or race and I will send you information packet as the date approaches. mxbag@comcast.net
  • One of our most popular cruises - to the Corinthian YC will take place August 9-10, hosted by the Blackburns. Berthing space is limited, so be sure to reserve your slip with Amy Blackburn: amyblack2000@earthlink.net
  • Date for the Benecia cruise, hosted by Hugh & Joanne Linn has not been set. stay tuned for more information.

Tides and Currents

It has been gratifying to have the first two cruises arranged and hosted by the Quamens and the Earharts. They have been well-planned and successful. It has taken a great load off me since my distance from the Bay has been somewhat of a handicap. I was hoping to sail to Presidio, but was a bit under the weather. I was still glad to be with our group who are always friendly and fun.

I cannot believe I didn't take more pictures of the people at Presidio - especially the Earharts. My apologies.

I am sincerely hoping to be able to sail to Brisbane next month. It's a new cruise spot for us and should be fun. Hope the weather is decent and hope to see you there.
